Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park is a diverse protected area in northern Germany, offering extensive forests, numerous lakes, and well-marked hiking and cycling trails, making it ideal for outdoor recreation and nature appreciation.
Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park (Naturpark Lauenburgische Seen) is located in the southeastern part of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, bordering the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The park covers a landscape shaped by the last ice age, featuring a series of glacially formed lakes scattered across rolling moraine hills and dense mixed forests. The region's topography includes wetlands, meadows, and small rivers, creating a rich mosaic of natural habitats. The park supports diverse flora and fauna, including populations of white-tailed eagles, ospreys, beavers, and rare orchids.
Established in 1990, the park serves both conservation and recreational purposes, spanning approximately 470 square kilometers (about 116,000 acres). Visitors can explore over 300 kilometers of trails suited for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, with interconnected paths linking lakeside beaches, observation towers, and historic villages. Water sports are popular on several lakes such as the Schaalsee, Ratzeburger See, and the Große Breite.
Historically, the park area contains small towns with medieval roots, castles, and monasteries, adding cultural interest to the natural setting. The town of Ratzeburg, for example, is known for its cathedral and idyllic lakeside location. The park attracts families, nature lovers, and outdoor enthusiasts who come to fish, paddle, cycle, or birdwatch in peaceful surroundings. Seasonal events and guided tours offered by local centers enhance visitor experience and promote awareness of the park’s ecological value.
